The 'Migraine' project acts as a visual definition of different symptoms migraine sufferers may endure. these images are influenced by everyday settings, recceing areas that had a resemblance to migraine symptoms.
I myself suffer with migraines for as long as I can remember. I've always struggled hunting for the right words to describe my symptoms. I wanted to use this sequence of work to visually describe migraines. I also wanted to create artwork that migraine sufferers can resonate with.
Ocular
Often migraines can be paired with visual auras where I can see zig zag line moving across my field of vision, a dark spot and/or sparkling or flashing lights of colour (usually yellow or reddish/orange spots).
Light is a common trigger for ocular migraine, whilst undergoing this project I took every image on analogue cameras with both 35mm and 120mm film. I did this because I wanted to avoid any artificial lights from the screens on digital cameras.
Vestibular
One of the most common and prominent symptoms I experience is having pain wrapping across my face or head which can reach up to my neck.
The image at the bottom of the leaves resembles how my migraine can make me experience vertigo. Causing confusion of feeling the sensation of motion, spinning and dizziness. I can also experience brain fog where I have difficulty with speech and not thinking cohesively.
I felt this plane of leaves symbolises this greatly as there is no coherent key part of the image staring at the image can cause confusion and make it seem like it is moving, almost acting as a visual vertigo.
Hemiplegic
This is the least common migraines I suffer with. Whenever I get a hemiplegic migraine, I usually have motor weakness on my left hand side of my body. I find it difficult to carry out tasks such as lifting things and maintaining balance when walking.
This image greatly describes the weird nerve tingling sensation I get on where I have motor weakness from my hemiplegic migraine.
